Baekdu Mountain Expedition
(August 13-29, 2004)

For seventeen days, fourteen hikers traveled the entire course of the great Baekdu Mountain Range, the territorial backbone of the Korean Peninsula and a symbol of shared history, and culture between South Korea and North Korea. Starting from Mt. Hala in Cheju Island, the Southern most end of the range, participants traveled the course of 834.80km by covering more than 60km a day until they reached Hyangnobong, the northern most end reachable in South Korea. There, they reflected upon the current divide and prayed for the day the two nations will begin to freely communicate with each other. Among those hikers were both amateur hikers and professional mountaineers, including Hong Gil Um, an internationally distinguished mountaineer.
