Magnet Theater 25/06/2008
The Magnet Theater, located on West 29th Street, is a place where everyone feels as home and can find a variety of classes and shows. Classes in improvisation are offered and are actually designed specifically to accommodate those who may have never stepped on stage before. These classes are open to anyone wishing to participate in a creative learning environment where they will gradually gain the confidence required to perform in front of a crowd. The school believes that “risk-taking, individuality, honesty, and playing at the top of your intelligence leads to brilliantly funny improvisation.”
An exciting part of the weekly show schedule at the Magnet Theater includes Megawatt, which is an improv show performed by ensembles comprised of selected graduates of the Magnet training program. These shows take place Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights and include two teams for each show and two shows a night.
Last Thursday night at 8:30, Moxie and Hello Laser performed first separately and then together at the end of the evening. The show began when the audience was invited to suggest a word. “Turbo” was thrown out as a great (if somewhat complicated to me) opener and the Moxie team began. Improv artist Garrett Palm began immediately, coming to the center of the stage and getting down on one knee, pretending to be playing Nintendo. His “father” soon entered, supported his battle against the aliens…and thus began another evening of improv for team Moxie. The group of six young improv artists worked well together, jumping in when inspired and creating a variety of interesting stories that kept the audience laughing. Next up was Hello Laser a five member all-male group that created a story line around a dry cleaner’s business.
