Teatro Stage Fest
20/06/2008

June 2- June 15, 2008
The Latino International Theater Festival of New York is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Latino theater and encouraging the next generation of Latino theater artists and audiences in New York. In addition to providing services like free professional training workshops and publishing the “Free Guide to Latino Theater in New York”, among other things, the organization is responsible for the TeatroStageFest, an annual two-week celebration dedicated to showcasing theater from Latin America, the US, the Caribbean, and Spain. The Second Annual Teatro Stage Fest took place from June 2-15, 2008 in various locations around New York City.

The variety of events included International productions, New York productions, Children’s theater, concerts, a comedy night, the Young Playwrights Latino Challenge, and artist discussion panels. Performed by Teatro SEA (Society of the Educational Arts, Inc.), La Muela del Rey Farfán (The Toothache of King Farfán) told the story of a stubborn king with a toothache who had to learn the values of love and respect in order to be healed. This bilingual production featured 20 life-size puppets, singers, musicians and a brand new music score and was a hit with audiences of all ages. A question and answer session after the Friday morning performance was a great way to encourage school children in understanding what is involved in the production of a play involving life-size puppets and two languages.

Other events included a Panel Discussion in two parts entitled “Visiones: From Page to the Stage” which took place at the Spanish Cultural Center in New York, the Instituto Cervantes. Members of the panel included local and international playwrights and directors participating in the Festival who enlightened the audience with personal experiences and insights into the creative process. Another success was Doña Flor y Sus Dos Maridos, based on the novel by Brazilian author Jorge Amado. The show was performed at Repertorio Español and will continue after the festival through the month of August.
