First Cultural Expo at Manhattan WCO Center
Over the summer of 2007, the Manhattan WCO Center in New York exploded with new users and activities. From dance and theatre rehearsals to art therapy and language classes, the Center has been abuzz with creative energy and excitement.
Part of the WCO Center mission is to provide a platform for intercultural exchange and education. To fulfill this component of the mission, the Manhattan WCO Center Expo was organized at the end of October, which showcased the many different groups and individuals who share the Manhattan space.
The 3-day event included an artist reception, lectures, workshops, and performances from groups who use the Center on a regular basis. The event was organized by the users themselves, to further allow ownership and pride in the Center and the contribution it makes to the community.
Vasil Gjika, founder of TheAlbanians.com, who has used the Center to teach Albanian language and culture, was a member of the Expo Organizing Committee. When asked about his experience with the Manhattan WCO Center, he said, “I am very pleased and I consider myself very lucky to have such a great opportunity where I can bring part of my Albanian culture to the broader community in New York City. In today’s world where everything has a price, the World Culture Open Center offers something nobody else does – a space for free.”
In regards to the Expo, Gjika stated, “I really do not know how to express my gratitude to World Culture Open, and I was very happy to present a sample of my work at the Expo. Also I had the chance to meet other hard-working individuals who want to make a difference in the community.” Gjika is in the process of organizing several special events at the Center, including a series of art exhibitions and performances that will teach the WCO community about Albanian culture.
The Manhattan WCO Center Expo took place from October 26-28 and included a week-long group exhibition displaying works from 12 artists who had previously used the Center to display their work. |
