FESPAD ? Creative Economy for Development Conference (2006)

In August 2006, WCO partnered with The African Union to sponsor and co-organized the 5th Pan-African Dance Festival (FESPAD) in Kigali, Rwanda. The biennial festival is an essential tool in providing healing and celebration to a country in need of optimism and recovery.

WCO aided in the organization of many components of FESPAD. For the first day of the Festival, WCO partnered with the Rwandese Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports to produce the Meeting of Ministers of Culture and Cultural Ambassadors, which brought seven African Ministers of Culture together to discuss the relationship between tradition and modernity. WCO also partnered with the UNDP Special Unit for South-South Co-operation (SU-SSC/UNDP) to organize several events, including a series of Creative Economy workshops for the general public, and the International Conference on Creative Economy for Development.

In addition, WCO organized a Humanitarian Service and Healing Arts Day, and an evening concert featuring a performance by WCO Cultural Ambassador Randy Weston.
