UNGYLS (UN Global Youth Leadership Summit) (2006)

WCO partnered with the UN New York Office of Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) to provide a cultural component at the UN Global Youth Leadership Summit (UNGYLS) in October 2006 at UN Headquarters. Young leaders from around the world gathered at the UN and committed themselves to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), initiatives designed to help the world tackle poverty, education, disease, environmental sustainability and more.

WCO, in partnership with the Rollback Malaria Partnership and UNOSDP, produced the Youth United Against Malaria Gala Concert on the first night of the UNGYLS. Hundreds of youth delegates selected from the 192 UN Member States and more than 1000 guests were entertained by a team of world-famous singers from around the globe. Performers included UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Angelique Kidjo, singer/songwriter Gordon Chambers, South African singer and UNICEF regional spokesperson for malaria Yvonne Chaka Chaka, rising star Karina Pasian, Korean producer and composer JY Park, and Algerian legend Khaled.

WCO also organized the International Bell Parade to symbolize the various voices and perspectives needed to accomplish the MDGs, and a workshop entitled ¡°Advancing the MDGs Through Cultural Exchange¡± that inspired participants to network and share information about the cultural aspects of the MDGs.
