Mr. Sakorn Yangkeawsot, otherwise known as Joe Louis, revived and adapted the Traditional Thai Small Puppets Performance, known as Hun Lakorn Lek, which had almost disappeared from Thai cultural scene for over 50 years.
Joe Louis has adapted and improved the Hun Lakorn Lek in many ways since its original creator, Mr. Klay. The head and face of the puppet has been modified allowing more movement. The costumes have become more elaborate and elegantly detailed. The performance itself has changed with great emphasis to making the puppets seem as real as possible. Joe Louis also incorporated the puppeteer into the performance, so the audience can witness the actions of the puppeteer as it operates the puppet. Before each performance is a brief history and explanation of how the Hun Lakorn Lek is performed, as well as a demonstration of how the puppets are built in the theater¡¯s reception area. Originally, puppet performances were kept to short excerpts of scenes from the Ramayana, performed before the actual Kohn performance. Today, Joe Louis has changed puppetry to include the entire scene, sometimes entire acts.
Hun Lakorn Lek has become known through the media and from most school institutions. Joe Louis Puppet theater has also been sent over seas representing Thai culture. In 1996, Joe Louis, after reviving Hun Lakorn Lek has become an important symbol of Thai culture and performance, received the National Artist Award in Performance Art (Lakorn Lek).
